glucophage is the non-proprietary name (no one ones that name) Metformin is a proprietary name (some one owns it)

So the generic name is glucophage, but another company can now decide to market glucophage and give it another proprietary name (or not).

EX: Tylenol is proprietary, while acetaminophen is non-proprietary. Or Panadol is proprietary, while acetaminophen is non-proprietary. (Same generic name different proprietary name)
