Thanks so much for mentioning this article from the Australian Medical Journal. It is one of the best articles I have read so far. I have been on Metformin off and on since May of 99. I have had PCOS symptoms starting at age 14 with my first period. I'm 31 today. Boy, time flew by! I learned about PCOS in Good Housekeeping. I had been through fertiltiy treatments twice before and didn't not conceive. I took the article to my gyn and asked if he would read it and consider drawing a fasting insulin level on me. He did and it came back elevated. He put me on the metformin, but also did ovarian drilling on me. My left ovary was really close to my uterus and I wanted to know why. I was also so freaked about the thick white covering that our ovaries get. I've already had an aunt to die of ovarian cancer and thought my fate may be the same. I got pregnant shortly after starting the met and my "belly button" procedure. Turned out one of the cysts had ruptered and attached my left ovary to my abd wall and was pulling my uterus over. Well, I got sick and lost the twins. I also had low hormone levels. Progesterone is something my body just don't know how to make. It's called a luteal phase defect. I got pregnant again in August of 99 and had my precious baby girl, Autumn in May of 2000. I had cried with the first visit to the doc with the article when I told him I thought I might have PCOS. He told me I did that they were like that 4 years before when I was doing the infertiltiy circus. I left crying, had a big panic attack on the way home. I just knew I was going to die young and never have kids. This was really hard for me because I come from a family with 10 kids (yes, my parents are still married). I was watching my younger siblings have kids before me. Everywhere I went was a pregnant belly or an invitation to another baby shower or child's birthday party. My family and friends still don't know the hell I went and still go through. I'm sure there are those that think I lie on the couch all day and scarf Doritos. The met did work for me and I feel homicidal without it. I just had my gall bladder removed and my doc wouldn't let me take the met while it was messed up, because met makes gallbladder disease worse. The acne, cravings and attitude were horrible. I've never really had a period on the met, but I feel better. I am really saddened by the number of medical professionals that don't know squat about PCOS. I am a critical care nurse that also has skills in maternal nursing. Several of the OBs have learned about PCOS from me and are now using the met on their patients. But I was shocked the other night when I found out that they are only using the met as a means to conceive. I am printing the article out that you turned me onto and will inservice every medical professional that I can. I get my met from my internist, Dr. Ed Daly in Natchez Mississippi. He isreally a great person and doc. He is truly a rare jewel. I'm glad that he takes the time to listen (really listen) to what I have to say and read the articles I bring him. Well, I've bent ya's ears enough for now, but thanks again. It means alot to me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
