Re: OA anyone? Sorry, longFrom: anonymous@obgyn.netTue, 12 Dec 2000 12:51:17 -0500
Neen, Well, here are a few attempts at finding the right "diet" for me: I'm on Met, but only 500mg/day. I'm in the process of finding a new doctor to "up" me to what I've read is an effective dose for PCOS. I tried the Carbohydrate Addicts Diet and that was OK, except that I started LIVING for my reward meal. I would plan it all day... I had less of a problem with the carb cravings since I could have them once a day for an hour. Although I lost 20 lbs on the diet, I realised that I was gradually cheating myself into a reward meal that was ALL CARBS! My weight loss slowed at the same time - strange coincidence? ;-) After going off the diet, I gained it all back. I was not counting carbs or being careful at all. The main thing I learned from this experience is/was that the only way I am going to lose or control my weight is to cut carbs. After YEARS of beating my self up over not being able to lose weight on a low fat, low calorie diet, believe me this is a relief! The next try: I recently gave up sugar and flour and started watching my carbs. I only ate complex carbs and then only with protein... My cravings have been nil. Now, I admit it took a few days to get that way. I don't feel a need to binge AND I don't feel like I may pass out from exhaustion every afternoon at work. I will never go back to eating flour and sugar, because I feel much better. I lost 5 pounds (in a month) without trying. I did eat a "regular" Thanksgiving meal with all the trimmings, and it took a couple of days to get rid of the cravings again. It was worth it - the meal AND the getting back to no sugar & flour. The new plan: I just started the Atkins plan. Since I already had given up flour, sugar and all refined carbs, the transition hasn't been too hard. I want to lose about 50 lbs and realise I have to be more aggressive. A doctor would probably tell you I should lose 100 lbs, but the older I get the less lofty my goals. The weight at which I feel good and healthy is 50 lbs away! I guess the short answer to your question is: I can't allow myself to have refined carbs at all, because, like any addict, once I get a little, it snowballs. Selena
