Re: Taking Met while pregnant?

Dear Theresa,

It's clear that this decision is truly a personal one, at least until more evidence shows the long term effects of Metformin during pregnancy. As for me, I will continue to take Metformin should I become pregnant. I had two miscarriages in the first trimester, and one successful pregnancy (all before I knew I had PCOS) that threatened miscarriage throughout the whole seven and a half months I carried her. I delivered early, but she is beautiful and healthy.

One last thing: because you may deliver early, please talk to your doctor about beta strep testing. It is a test that normally gets done in week 35, but some doctors give the antibiotic during any early labour as a good precaution. I would recommend this if you give birth early and have not received the test yet. It is an antibiotic that does no harm to the baby, but delivering while positive and not treating it can cause some serious complications.

Whatever you have decided to do, it is for the well being of your child, and that decision can never be wrong.

Take care,

--

p.s. I am a patient of Dr. Glueck's. I chose him as a doctor because of his stand on taking Metformin while pregnant, and because of the likelihood that I could get an accurate diagnosis and treatment under his care.
