Need another favor, have ? about Spiro and AvandiaFrom: Kristy (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 22 Nov 2000 04:09:30 -0800 (PST)
Hi again ladies!! I have another question for all of you but this time for those who take Spiro and Avandia. For those who missed it last time I would like to give the history of my mother who once again needs your help (I'm repeating this history for the sake of new members). She's not a member of the list as we aren't sure if she has PCOS even though I strongly feel that she does. Fifteen years ago she was diagnosed with Type II diabetes and has tried all of the different medications out on the market practically when it comes to the following meds: Glucophage, Glyburide, Rezulin, and now the Amaryl and the Avandia. At one time (back in 1996-99) she was on the Rezulin and Insulin shots. She then fired the endocrinologist who put her on the Rezulin and the Insulin and started seeing her regular family dr. The dr took her off of the Insulin and the Rezulin and then just put her on the Glucophage but that caused her to have tingling in her thigh area yet again. So then the dr put her on Amaryl and then about 5 months ago put her on the Avandia also. Then Mom started having more problems with water retention. She had tried other diuretics (don't remember the name of the other) and they didn't work for her so I asked her dr's assistant if we could ask for the Spironolactone to see if that would help her. She is taking 1 50 mg tablet twice a day (yes 100 mg total). Since she has been on the Spiro at this dosage she has done well (I'm also taking Spiro-second go around but my dr has me on 50 mg and I seem to be doing ok with it) and lost a lot of water weight thus far. She went off of her meds (the ones for diabetes) for a while (not sure exactly how long but long enough to send her blood sugar quite high b/c of the stress level being real high after my grandma died). In addition to the real high readings (like about 300 or 400 can't remember exactly now) she ended up with a yeast infection. When she first started having problems with the yeast I thought that it might have something to do with the diabetes. Sure enough it was related to the diabetes and they gave her the Diflucan to take care of the problem. Well, since she has been back on the Avandia she's been having tembling inside of her as if her blood sugar is quite low. She is taking 8 mg of the med but I'm not sure just how many times a day, even though I think that it might be only once a day. The other day she took that and the Spiro together and she had the trembling again. So what I'm wondering on her behalf is this: Does anyone know if it's safe to take the two of them together at the same time? I'm hoping to have her get tested for the PCOS b/c as I said I strongly feel that she has it. She has an appt with my gyn on the 2nd (yes my dr also works Sat but once a month) for a gyn annual exam as well as to talk about the possibility of PCOS as my dr knows a lot about this condition. Could you all help me out here by telling me what kinds of things my mother and I need to be asking my dr in order to help my mom find out if she has PCOS or not? Diane, I will check out Dr. Sweet's site but in the mean time if I could get other sites that list FAQs on testing, etc I would greatly appreciate it. I did send some links that were posted here a while back but I can't remember what those links were and I'm not sure if my mother ever read them. As I said her appt is on the 2nd. I will let everyone know how that goes. Also, would someone run by me one more time (b/c I can't recall which posts in the archives talk about the IGTT vs GTT right now) the difference between the IGTT and GTT are as far as how the tests are performed and over what time frame difference if one applies? Some of this I've learned for myself when I was first diagnosed but as it has been 4 years I can't remember and I want to be able to tell my mother everything correctly. Thanks so much.
