Personally, I think that hthat is a poor excuse for the doctor to give you for not prescribing metformin. Metformin is thought to be safe in pregnancy HOWEVER, not enough tests have been done to say outright it is fine. In Africa and other such countries there have been many pregnancies while on metformin with no increase in defects. Even is western countries there have been many cases where diabetics taking metformin didn't know they were pregnant and their babies were fine. It is probably prudent to use contraception while on metformin, but isn't the end of the world if a babe is conceived while on it. Hope this helps, Love Emma
