Re: White Bread.. Wheat bread... ???From: paula (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon, 16 Oct 2000 09:17:53 -0500 (CDT)
ok, the reason for wheat instead of white is this. wheat bread has more fiber in it. humans can not break fiber down into carbohydrates, therefore you can subtract the amount of fiber from the amount of carbohydrates contained and what you have left is effective carbohydrates. you should lose weight by cutting carbs. the reason for this is simple. in most women with PCOS insulin is the cause. (i personally believe all women with PCOS have IR, just that not all women have it to a detectable level). so what happens is this....carbohydrates effect your blood sugar 100% of the time. meaning that everytime you eat a carb, your blood sugar rises (this is true for everyone, including those without PCOS or IR) so what happens is your blood sugar rises, and your pancreas secretes insulin to manage the carbs. if you are eating protein and fats, the blood sugar does not rise to the same levels as with carbs, so you are not triggering an insulin reaction each time you eat, thus reducing the pancratic response and ending the carb cycle. most women who low-carb notice an initial weight loss the first week, although this usually is water loss from entering Ketosis, and with 150mg of carbs per day you should be safe from entering ketosis. i am not a supporter or serious reduction in carbohydrate intake, although i do believe moderate low-carbing is beneifical...i am not certain about how many carbs you should consume, but to me your diet sounds reasonable...i personally think that replacing processed carbohydrates with whole grains will help you lose weight...also exercise is key. according to most things i have read, walking about 12-14 miles a week will greatly improve hormone imbalances... hope this helps! love, paula
