According to the book, "SYNDROME X - The complete nutritional program to prevent and reverse insulin resistance", Syndrome X, can be, and is classified as having Insulin resistance - which, is the inability to properly deal with dietary carbohydrates, such as sugars, etc. - which could be why it would thought of as a metabolic disorder.
