Re: Ovarian DrillingFrom: Angela (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sun, 24 Sep 2000 13:07:38 -0500 (CDT)
Macey, Shortly after being diagnosed with Stein-Levanthol Syndrome (the old name for PCOS), in 1987, my doctor performed a "wedge-shaped reduction" of both ovaries. This is a little different, I think, than the ovarian drilling, but the principal was the same. Some of the tissue was removed, with the thought that it would allow me to ovulate. This procedure was covered under my insurance because my doctor wanted to use it as a treatment. The results? After a week in the hospital, a scar in my bikini area, and about six weeks of healing, I had one "normal" period before my body returned back to its original state of not ovulating. Doctors I've spoken to since say that isn't used anymore as a treatment. I think that I would try less invasive methods first. Have you tried metformin yet? The problem is that the extra insulin production we have continues to disrupt hormone levels, etc. so until we fix that we will continue to have problems. Let us all know what you decide and good luck!! - Angela
