Kallie’s Diet: (Please (Please)((PLEASE)) check with your Dr. to see if this is okay for you) An Endocrinologist gave me this diet Mid-July, 2000. I started the diet on July 20th, I started my period on July 21st I stopped the diet July 31, 2000. I had a positive pregnancy test August 26, 2000.

Please bear with me, I want to give you some of my background in case this happened to me only by circumstance – I want to give you an idea of where I was. I am in NO WAY qualified to instruct anyone on how to eat – I am just sharing the string of events that led up to my current pregnancy.

– I was 312 lbs at the time. (I know, that seems impossible, I am so scared of being this huge!) I was on the diet less than two weeks before I got Strep throat and could only eat soup and hot tea. I never went back on the diet, I did not lose much weight – but I did get pregnant after 2 ½ years of trying many fertility interventions. I had 2 diagnostic laperoscopies (July & Sept. 99) that found cysts in both ovaries, resulting in "drilling" my ovaries, minimal endometriosis, and an adhesion where my right ovary was stuck to my c-section scar. I also had a Salpingogram to flush my fallopian tubes in April, 2000.

– I’d been off all meds for 3 months when this happened – I just wanted a break, the salpingogram in April felt invasive and I wanted to re-evaluate, to make sure I wasn't going, "to far for my own comfort level." Over the last year I have taken 4 cycles of Clomid (Oct. & Nov. 99 and March & April 00.) Also I had been on 1000mg Glucophage (Met) from October 99 – April 00. This did not help me lose weight nor did it seem to effect my cycles. I had been ovulating (though not like clockwork) since the 2nd Lap in Sept 99.

– To me this seems like a miracle – I am NOT sure the diet had anything to do with it or it is just a BIG coincidence. ********* But I have to wonder because this is what the Endo said to me nearly verbatim, “I have a lot of patients who get pregnant on this diet after only a month or

two. So if you only want to lose weight and don’t want to get pregnant, I’d wear a condom.” *********** Those words are what make me wonder if this particular diet really might have had something to do with it. I mean - that is pretty uncanny. He knew my history and told me my blood

work showed I had high insulin.

– Ladies, please, While I'd love to be a ray of hope, the last thing I want to do is be the cause of false hope to anyone - so please take this with a grain of salt – this could have just been luck, a miracle from God. It was also not under doctor’s orders that I stopped this diet when I did, in fact, I have not been back to the Endo yet. His professional advice was to remain on the diet until there was a confirmed pregnancy or weight loss was achieved.

High Protein/ Low Carb / Very low/no sugar

1. Rule one – Do not eat packaged things that have little or no Carbs and say they are sugar free they are not and they will compromise the results. Do not believe it when a box says something is sugar free – it is not. He said it will say dextrose or have another form of sweetener in it that my body would turn to sugar. Bottom line, avoid things that said say sugar free AND avoid things that may be Carb free but contain sugars. This means NO dressings, Mayo, teriyaki sauce, soy sauce, mustards and get this, Vinegar too! No sugar No sugar No sugar... ((( I did notice that some of the meats and sausage said 1 or 2 grams of sugar, I tried to avoid these but sometimes could not so very little grams of sugar seems "okay" in the meat form.

2. No milk type dairy products, no ice cream (Most Cheese & eggs okay, see later on) He said it is VERY important not to drink milk.

3. No snacking in between meals but you may have a bedtime snack as long as it consists of ½ lb protein and NO FRUIT AT SNACK TIME!

4. It is VERY important to eat at least ½ a lb of protein meat at the beginning of each meal before you eat even a single shred of lettuce ( or other veggie). Always eat the minimum protein first.

5. Then you can have as many of the allowable vegetables as wanted, you may continue to eat additional protein if you want. The Endo told me it would be great if I went home and ate 10 pork chops….

6. Then at the end of each meal – BUT NOT bedtime snack eat one piece of regular size fruit. (No grapes or melons)

7. Bed time snack is optional.

8. Cook everything you can in olive oil, use olive oil as a topping on your salad. ((a tomato is a fruit and cannot be eaten in the salad but can be eaten after at the end of the meal.

 Eat at least ½ pound of the following at the beginning of each meal Beef, pork, chicken, cheese, (no cottage cheese, soft cheese or cream cheese,) Olives, avocados.

 After eating the above you can have eggs, turkey, and seafood too.

 Vegetables Cooked mushrooms, Cooked greenbeans, raw lettuce raw carrots – other veggies that have little to no carbs and NO SUGAR.

NEVER EVER EAT: Corn, Pasta or potatoes, no rice or bread of any kind. Wheat is worse than white he said!)

At the end of each meal have one piece of regular sized fruit. You can season food with salt, pepper and Mrs. Dash. (there may be other things but those are what I asked about)

To drink you can have black tea, (No lemons), black coffee, water, Diet Coke or Diet Pepsi (only). (No Diet Dr. Pepper, it has prune juice, no Diet &-up or Sprite they have citrus…etc.) But you can have Equal to sweeten the tea or coffee in moderation.

I kept a food diary so below is exactly what I ate: Quantities aren’t mentioned but please assume that there was at least ½ lb of the protein. I drank LOTS of iced tea with probably too much equal, lots of water and lots of Diet Pepsi.

It is simple - but tough too..

Okay – I guess that’s it. I hope this helps. Keep in touch. Vannostrand@ivillage.com
