Re: IR/diabetes questionFrom: paula (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 30 Aug 2000 17:00:19 -0500 (CDT)
general guidelines for the diagnosis of diabetes is 3 fasting blood sugars over 126...or one random blood sugar that is extremely high..like i was diagnosed with a random blood sugar of 385. insulin resistance is best diagnosed with an IGTT. it can be diagnosed with a fasting insulin, but sometimes that fasting insulin comes back normal and doctors immediatly rule I.R. out. so it is better to go ahead and have the IGTT to be sure. this is a 2-5 hour test that measures and maps your spikes and dips in insulin levels. diabetes and insulin resitance are connected, but generally....insulin resistance is characterized with abnormally high insulin levels and diabetes is characterized with abnormally high blood sugar levels... hope this helps! love, paula
