What is meant by irregular periods? Help!

I am a 28 year old female who is at her wits end. I have always had a period every month, but they are irregular - never at the same time. During the past few months, my period has been about 2 - 2 1/2 weeks apart, with it lasting from 8-15 days. The last 3 days are very light, almost spotty. Can PCOS be a possibility since I don't have infrequent periods? My other symptoms include the following: I weighed 145 five years ago and have gradually gained around 40 pounds now. I was on birth control until about a year ago because I had quite a time trying to find a pill that I would not have problems with. I would bleed around 2 - 3 weeks while taking pills that had once worked well for me. While on the last pill, I noticed brown spots appearing on my face and increased facial hair - about 10 - 20 "whiskers" on my chin and dark hair above my lip. My weight gain has been around my waist and breast - which never seemed to be a problem before. I have been trying to lose weight, but it seems that I am eating less and less and gaining more and more. I crave carbohydrates to the point of insanity and when I do not have them, I feel faint, or my hands shake and I feel sick to my stomach. I guess I keep telling myself that I'm getting older (29) and I'm going to have to try to work harder to lose the weight. THe problem is that I feel like I would have to not eat in order to lose weight! I have an appointment next month for my yearly exam, and have changed doctors. Is it possible to have an extreme increase in symptoms is as little as a year's time? Help!
