Re: PCOS: Could I be diagnosed Properly?....LongFrom: Monica (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri, 25 Aug 2000 13:00:52 -0500 (CDT)
I would ask your doctor what he used to diagnose the PCOS. If you have this disorder, you are going to have to be assertive in the way you gather information from health professionals. There is a lot of misunderstanding about PCOS. You don't have to have cysts, he may have diagnosed based on blood work or other symptoms. Because it is a disorder (really just a collection of symptoms), you could have any number of the symptoms and be diagnosed. The reason you don't fit the profile is because you are thin with good skin, no cysts and three kids. My guess is you don't have weird hair growing anywhere either! That doesn't necessarily mean that the dx is wrong, just that you're lucky :) Either way, you have a right to know why the dr made the diagnosis. My experience has been that if you ask respectfully, but firmly, you will get a decent answer. I am not familiar with fever and infection-like symptoms being a part of the disorder, you might check on that. The intermittent periods and long-standing irregular periods do fit the profile. Also abdominal pain. I do have pregnancy-like symptoms, but had always attributed that to the medication (naseau, hot flashes, tender breast and abdomen). Good luck and let us know if we can help.
