There several things you can do to make your pores appear smaller. Part of the trick is to keep the pores cleaned out. I have tried many things and what has worked best for me are chemical peels and micro dermabrasions. I plan on starting them again if the Met doesn't clear up my skin. (if it does I'm springing for laser)

The dermabrasion is great especially if you still have some breakout. It can remove small scars and is AWESOME for smaller pores. (I probably saw at least an 85% reduction in mine) The reason it works so well is that not only does it get rid of that top layer of skin, it "sucks" the goop out. In theory it's like having your face sandblasted (not painful though : )) and vacuumed out at the same time. I was having mine done during that "time" because I would get those painful zits on my forehead and hairline, the dermabrasion would suck out all the goop (sorry to be so graphic). I would then have a glycolic peel afterwords which then would dry the zit up and I'd be done with that nasty stuff for the month.

The first day or two your face feels like it has a bit of sunburn. After that you're a tad pink for a day or so. I would say that within 4-5 days you look great for a month. (longer if you don't always break out) I have the red hard zits on my forehead this month since not having mine done, they are painful and I hate it!

Anyhow these are expensive but I've spent a fortune on products over the past few years. My acne isn't horrible luckily (well it's horrible to me after never having acne before but ...), I know there are clients at the spa I go to with acne that is just terrible that have had great success with this treatment too.
