With her family history, the doctor shouldn't rule out pcos. In my teens I had a period sometimes every 32 days sometimes every 38 days sometimes it would be 60 some-odd days it was irregular but as I got older it became more and more even. by my mid twenties I was 29 days to the day for years. For the past seven years I am every 26 days. in my teens i wasn't abnormaly hairy. The hair on my body was white blond and very fine, but as I got older some areas of my body hair began to change. By my early twenties I had to start tweezing a few thick, dark beard hairs from my chin. tThis progressed slowly over the years. By my mid thirties I had a full beard on my entire chin and a few dark hairs sprouting from other areas of my face and neck. my body hair also startd to change in texture and color, and hair began to grow in places it had never been before. My point here is that, if she is pcos, left untreated, her hair can get worse.(It might not at all) and having a period does not rule out pcos. weight is not an indication of pcos because I have always been about 110lbs. I have had two children, granted in 20yrs without birth control Ive only gotten pregnant twice, but some pcos woman can get pregnant on thier own. The only way to rule out pcos is to look at the whole history and hormone testing. A whole endocrine work-up is in order to see what is causing her symptons. she may very well have thyroid irregularities or both pcos and thyroid problems. I have an over-active thyroid and Hashimotos. So far the thyroid antibodies are only effecting the excess thyroid action so my #'s look good on my thyroid work-ups. My mother also had this condition and didn't have to be placed on thyroid medication untill she was in her fifties. The best thing her doctor can do is run a complete set of tests including an adreanal work-up. My DHEA-S was the only blood test that came back as slightly elevated in my first work-up. It was 400 and 380 was the labs cut off reference range. This was enough for my doctor to refer me to an endo. even though he didn't think I was pcos. My diagnosis came when my endo ran complete tests to rule out any thing else and found that I was indeed pcos even with normal hormone ranges. It takes looking at the whole picture. High end "normal" ranges can be enough to cause pcos symptons. The degrees of symptoms, and the degrees of underlying causes of pcos are as individual as the woman it effects. I hope your sister can get a proper diagnosis in a timely fashion.
