Re: The Glycemic IndexFrom: Anja (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 3 Aug 2000 23:24:15 -0500 (CDT)
You are not the only one who can't do the extreme low carb diets. They do have some serious health issues. A friend of mine with PCOS was put onto the Atkins diet by her doctor, and has now developed pretty bad diabetis. There is a very good book on it, it is called the Glucose Revolution. It's avaliable at Amazon.com, at $12 pluss shipping. Only thing I did not do, was to follow their advise to eat low calorie/fats foods, because my doctor said I needed to eat more not less. A lot of low cal foods also contain more simple carbohydrates. You will have to customize it to fit your needs too, but it lays a good healthy framework for a diet that is not too extreme to live with. In the beginning it does take some planning, to combine the foods right, so the overall glycemic index of your meals are low. The book contains the index of foods itself, some of witch are included, some not, in a very good website about it I would recommend that you read, at http://www.cruzio.com/~mendosa/gi.htm. All the other websites about this only repeats parts of this, and are not worth your time. The explanation of the index and why it works is also very good. Print out their index, and keep it with the book, together it has all the information currently avbaliable. One warning - this diet will make you loose your appetite, be carefull to still eat! And try to eat very often, just small portions - European style so to speak. I was on the diet the last 4 months, and lost 52lb (252 to 200lb). Now I am adding back more "bad" stuff, too stop loosing, because I am pregnant and don't want to hurt the kid. My doctor wanted me to just try a higher calorie but lower simple carb diet before giving me any drugs, and since it's working I don't see any reason to take any drugs. And yes, I deffinately have a lot more energy now, sleep better and have less aces and pains probably due to the reduced exsess weight. Good luck SusieQ! Feel free to e-mail or post to me with any questions. I am not a specialist, but I did look around a lot and I do have the education to understand why this works.
