Re: Severe PCOS and medical oneupmanship...LONGFrom: donna (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sun, 30 Jul 2000 20:07:39 -0500 (CDT)
I've been reading and posting here for about 5 months. I do not have pcos but my 17 year old daughter does (some of you probably remember the story: bad treatment and ended up in the hospital with blood transfusions). I learned more here in such a short time than any of my other quests. We are now armed and ready to face the medical profession!(One of the drs. in the hospital, a resident , said , when I asked , that pcos was a trashcan for a lot of unrelated symptoms.)The women who post here are intelligent, well informed, funny, and willing to share their experiences and knowledge to help all of us. Fertility is not now an issue for my daughter but someday it will be and it IS a part of pcos and by reading those posts we are becoming more informed. My daughter does not yet have a problem with hair loss and growth but if left untreated she will. Does that make her pcos less severe? Maybe to some of you, but maybe thats not the same perspective of a teenager who gained about 160 lbs in a couple of years and went from an outstanding student to just getting by because of all of the other physical and emotional issues involved. Whining about whose case is worse is ridiculous and whining because some particular issues are more important than others to some is equally stupid!! I do not feel that there is too much emphasis placed on one aspect over another, all are important and if one post isn't to your liking then scroll on or just pick a thread and go through the archives. Severe???? Whose case isn't??? The woman who weighs 350 lbs but still has a period a few times a year??? How about the woman who was just diagnosed with Type II diabetes??? Or maybe my 4th grade teacher who had a fairly elaborate upsweep to disguise the baldness??? Or do we categorize by the numbers??? Or how about by our drs. definition- maybe that would depend on how many pcos patients they have or on their education??? Face it, pcos is a lousy thing to have, it invades your life and tries to take over, but so do a lot of other diseases. Life ain't fair but it sure helps to know that all of you know how it feels and are caring and empathetic even if the world isn't. So- get over it! We all get all the whining and misunderstanding and ignorance out there!!! Have a great day :)
