Definitely take a friend with you - they should let you do this. Nowadays if the doctor is male, they nearly always have the nurse (usu. female) stay in the room with you during the exam, just to assure that there is no misconduct, misunderstandings, etc. Maybe, if you felt comfortable, you could talk to the nurse privately before the exam? I'm sure she would be extra supportive in light of your fear and discomfort. Very sorry to hear that this happened to you.
