Re: Fear of Pap ExamFrom: Jennifer (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri, 14 Jul 2000 19:52:36 -0500 (CDT)
Hi, The previous suggestion was good about finding a doctor who is the opposite attack of the abuser. Definitely take a friend with you - they should let you do this. Nowadays if the doctor is male, they nearly always have the nurse (usu. female) stay in the room with you during the exam, just to assure that there is no misconduct, misunderstandings, etc. Maybe, if you felt comfortable, you could talk to the nurse privately before the exam? I'm sure she would be extra supportive in light of your fear and discomfort. Very sorry to hear that this happened to you. But I think it is especially important for you to get a pap smear, just to make sure your reproductive system is healthy. Jennifer
