Hi Tracy -- I'm just figuring this stuff out, too. But as I understand it, 1 gram of carbs contains approximately 4 calories. Therefore, it's not appropriate to say that 30% of 1200 daily calories is 360 grams -- it's more like 90. That's still higher than many people here consume, but you may find it more doable, especially in early days, than only 30 or 40 grams (one banana has 27 grams, after all). As for the non-sugar carbs in your cereal, they're probably things like grains; check the box. I know what you mean about it being hard to keep the carbs down; I crave the little buggers myself. My own personal feeling, esp. for those of us who tend to get obsessive and find it hard to find the "will power" (which,a s someone else helpfully pointed out to me, is not the real problem -- the addiction is), is that we're better off to go moderate at the beginning. Eat your carbs, but go light on them. I've replaced 2 slices of toast at breakfast, with 1 slice, and now with 1 slice of a Ryvita cracker, which has 7 grams. Along with it, I have peanut butter, for protein, yogurt (which has about 11 grams carbs, but also protein), ground flax seeds, and a sprinkle of brewer's yeast, which is high in chromium (which helps with the insulin response). Instead of a cup of rice, have 1/2 cup and then down to 1/3. Stuff like that. Experiment with the different diets. E.g., I found CAD too hard -- I craved stuff all day then pigged out at night. The Zone is easier for me, cuz it balances protein with carbs all through the day. You have to see what works for you. Just be kidn to yourself while you're at it.

Good luck. Cheers -- Alina
