Re: To Rae progesterone creamFrom: Rae (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 4 Jul 2000 14:41:44 -0500 (CDT)
Alex, I've never actually used progesterone cream but I'm considering trying it depending on what my endocrinologist decides to do about treatment options. What drugs you go with may also be a personal matter; because I'm not trying to conceive I'm more interested in keeping my uterus healthy by not going months without a period. But frankly, I've always liked not having a period every month because mine are killers that knock me out for a few days. One symptom of PCOS - and the reason for the cysts - is low progesterone. The progesterone is actually what makes the eggs 'pop' and when there isn't enough of this hormone the egg stays in the follicle of the ovary and ends up forming a cyst. Low progesterone also can cause miscarriages. What I don't know, is whether a progesterone cream is easier on your body than say, a low dose birth control pill of just progesterone (in this case "birth control" doesn't necessarily mean "birth prevention"). Do they sell progesterone cream at Boots and the like, or do you have to get a prescription? I don't know of the cost differences between N. America and the UK nor do I know how far it goes, never having used it. Do a search against this forum and you'll probably come up with a whole bunch of other posts. --Rae
