Sed rates determine the amount of cytokines in the blood which are released when there is systemic inflammation. There are many things that the Dr. could be looking for with this test. If your were complaining about pain in your joints, this is one test to see how much inflamation there is. The problem is, your SED rate changes, it may be 12 the next day or 37 later in the day. The test only shows the amount of cytokines in your blood at that moment in time. Did you also have a RA(rheumatoid arthritis) factor drawn, that would indicate that the Dr. is checking to see if you have RA.

A “normal” sed rate is under 20. No, they can not pin-point were the inflamation is coming from. It could be a “foreign body”, or simple inflamation. It is best to talk with you Dr. about it and ask why the test was done.
