Alexis Re: BOOHOO..Had first visit with new REFrom: Judy (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sat, 1 Jul 2000 15:54:29 -0500 (CDT)
Hi Alexis: I'm not an expert, but it's my understanding that a fasting insulin/glucose are not necessarily just as good. (They often come back "normal.") If you're having problems being diagnosed (as I am), it might be worth it to *know* for sure if you are IR by having at least a 2 hour IGTT. I personally requested a 5-hour IGTT (which apparently isn't the norm) after reading several posts here from ladies who shared their IGTT results. (Apparently, their levels read "normal" until hour 4-5 --- they were insulin resistant, but if they'd only taken a 2-hour test, they would have been told they were "normal" and sent home.) I'm having the same frustration as you: I was diagnosed with PCOS about 7 years ago, yet my doctors now disagree with that and say I'm not. It's been maddening. Many docs seem to be all too ready to dismiss the PCOS idea right off the bat because I'm slender. The insulin issue you mentioned always peeves me: If insulin is the crux of the PCOS problem, as current research states, than it seems like *common sense* to me to check it thoroughly (i.e, with an IGTT)!!! I simply cannot understand the lack of curiosity on the part of many doctors to simply *check* on this basic point. It's not rocket science. If your doctors don't seem to be curious about it either (like my docs), push for it yourself: Tell them to humor you and order one, whatever it takes, or find another doctor who cares more about getting to the root of the problem. Your health is too important. I've personally requested my IGTT (even though I felt like a pest for doing so) for July 5. I'd simply like to know. *I* for one am with you and have been plagued by the question of "WHY the frustration??" lately, so I want to *get some answers*!!! ;-) Hope this helps. Judy
