Heather - How fortunate that there are others that have/do suffer(ed) and can share the information with you. At 40 yrs old, with two beautiful children, I can tell you it's a world of difference to know you're not alone. I had no idea why I was so hairy, or why my face was breaking out, or why my periods didn't come. I married at 18, to my high school sweetheart. After 4 years of unprotected sex I conceived, only to lose it at 6 wks. Still undiagnosed, I spent the next year in a depressed state longing to be pregnant. I finally did conceive, after 8 months without a cycle. I had done an in-home pg test only because I was feeling "wierd". Lo and behold it had a ring (yeah, now you just dip in through your pee stream any time of the day - I SAID I was 40!) I was 5 weeks pregnant when I found out and spent the next 7 1/2 months throwing up and getting hairier. The OB/GYN asked my if I was calling to make an appointment to deliver the baby! Seems the severe hormone imbalance has something to do with the vomiting...who knows. The belly was the worst, and I too had a section-for which, of COURSE, they had to shave me from my knees to my boobs! THAT didn't help the situation either. But during the surgery they had a first-hand look at my ovaries, and, guess what? I have PCOS! They called it Stein-Levinthal Syndrome. All they did was mark it on my chart, NO ONE talked to me about it! At my follow-up exam at 6wks post-partum I read it in my chart and questioned them; ("Oh it's a benign condition. Call us if you go three months without a period. HA!) I went onto bcp after giving birth to my beautiful, 9.4lb daughter, and experienced elevated bp. They took me off it and, doggone, if I didn't get pregnant the next month! Only, by that time I began to recognize the ovulation pain for what it was and KNEW I was in trouble...should've used a condom. The throwing up started at 6 wks and continued for 5-1/2 months with this one. A planned section two weeks before the due date delivered a beautiful 8lb 13oz, 23-1/2" boy, and that was the end of the productive line. I had my tubes destroyed while I was open during his delivery - a painful but necessary choice given my difficult pregnancies and births. But I cherish my children and keep praying for more to be discovered about this disease. I fear my daughter also has it. She'll be 16 next week and she has irregular periods and a slight mustache already. Thank the good Lord she's a very light blonde so she doesn't need to shave her thighs (which I do) as well as below her knees. She started her period at 11-1/2 but she's been fairly regular, though long cycling. I started at 12 but only had a couple cycles and didn't cycle again until I was 15 or 16. After the pg's I became more regular but still only cycle about 7x/yr. I know more about my disease than my OB! This site has been a great support, even though I've mostly been lurking in the shadows and reading everyone's posts.

Bytheway, the hairiness got better after deilvery, but I still shave every day, pluck when I can, and bleach whenever I have the time. I've found the Nad's hair removal product to be a lot better than the traditional hot waxing (it's water soluble and a lot more convenient). I did try laser removal once, but at $125 per session it just doesn't fit into my budget - plus you need to let it grow to at least 1/8" in length (I'm not inclined to wear a scarf over my face or hibernate while it's growing in!)

Best regards and God Bless, and congratulations on your successful pregnancy. Kimberly
