Re: 14-year-old daughter with ovarian cyst

My daughter is 13. She has been on Glucophage (1500 mg/day) since the end of November. Her period has regulated and her moods have been SO much better (hmmm, I wonder how I acted before Glucophage...). She did not have the excess hair except in the small of her back. This has almost totally disappeared. I would not recommend the birth control pill unless the patient is sexually active. The pill has many unwanted side effects that are bad: weight gain, facial hair, hair loss, etc. I would not have put my child on this even if the endo had recommended it. I believe that you will find that many women first found their symptoms after going on the pill or after going off the pill. I really have found this to be a consistant story.

Your daughter is very lucky to have a mom who is doing research to find out the best treatment.

Good luck to both of you!

P.S. BTW, if you have a son who is reaching adolescence, you may want to have his insulin levels checked also. This is a non-discriminatory gene.
