Hi all. I'm still trying to figure out this whole PCOS thing. I have seen some red flags regarding the symptoms and myself. My question is this. I have gained approx. 40 pounds in the past 3 years, without any real change in my diet or exercise. The symptoms of PCOS have increased with my weight gain. These include weight gain around my waist and breast area, facial hair, extremely irregular periods lasting on average from 10 - 17 days, skin tics on my armpits (these have been there for as long as I can remember, so I don't know if they would be considered symptoms), brown splotches on my face, inability to take oral contraceptives due to the varying hormone levels, whereas before I had no problems, extreme carbohydrate cravings - they only seem to get worse. After all this, my question is one of weight loss or doctor first? Should I try and lose weight first and see if the symptoms get better, or would should I try to find a doctor and find out if PCOS is the culprit? I have looked for a doctor in my area, and the doctors seem to all be reproductive or fertility doctors. I have not tried to get pregnant, although my husband and I are not really doing anything to avoid it. Is it possible to see a reproductive endo. or fertility doctor who knows about PCOS without the pregnancy issue? I guess I would feel dumb calling a doc and say, "Hi, I think I might have PCOS, but I'm not trying to get pregnant right now, can you help me? I feel like I don't know what to do! Any help out there?
