Your symptoms are those of PCOS, combine that with the family history and it looks very much like you may have PCOS. You may want to see a specialist that has information about PCOS.

The ortho tricyclen is not a good pill for us. The bleeding that you are having between periods is called "break-through bleeding" and is an indication that the hormones in the pill are not appropriate for you. If you neeed to prevent pregnancy, you should be on a single dosage pill instead of a varying dosage pill. The reason your period was so heavy with the Provera is because of the thickness of your uterus. All of the lining that had build up during the months that you did not have a period had to be flushed out. If this had been left, you would be at a much greater risk for endometrial cancer.

You do not have to have cysts to have PCOS. The name was determined before this was discovered. Also, cysts do not ofter show up on an sonogram. I had a normal looking test and during an exploratory surgery, it was discovered that I had over 100 cysts on each ovary.

The research on PCOS has really exploded in the last two years. Your dr may not know about it yet. You can see if there is a dr in your area on the PCOSupport web site. http://www.pcosupport.org You can look under health care professionals and under research studies. You can also ask here for recommendations for a dr in your area.

If you have PCOS, you should be tested for insulin problems with a 2 - 5 hour glucose tolerance test with insulin levels (IGTT or GTT with insulin). A fasting level will NOT do! It has been determined that PCOS is linked with insulin problems. Some drs suspect that all women with PCOS will have an insulin problem show up if the tests were sensitive enough. You can pass the insulin problem to your *children*, boys and girls. You need to find out if this is what you have for yourself and your kids.
