Re: Belle - Test Results - IR - Yes- Thank youFrom: Belle (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri, 23 Jun 2000 10:09:43 -0500 (CDT)
Coming from someone who has PCOS and both of her children are IR (one a girl with PCOS, the other a boy), I can say that there is nothing worse with this problem than having your children have it. The good thing is that when it is caught early, you can deal with it. Start out very slowly on the metformin (Glucophage). The goal here is to end up taking your recommended dosage. You do not have to take this all at once. It is recommended that you work up to it. You can start with 1/2 of a pill a day (1/4 if necessary), then build up over a few weeks. You should have her take the low dosage for a week with her largest meal. The next week take that same dosage with the largest meal and the next largest meal. (If she took a pill the first week, she may want to take a pill with the largest meal and 1/2 of a pill with the next largest meal.) Build up slowly like this increasing 1/2 to 1/4 of a pill a week until the full dosage has been reached. She may experience some abdominal problems when the dosage is increased. If she experiences them for two days, I would back the dasage back down a 1/4 or 1/2 of a pill for a week. Always take with food. After a while she will not have to do this but it will be several months. Do not eat meals that are very high in carbs, some women have reported that this makes them sick. Before I started, someone said that she was less sick if she took a multi-vitamin each day. I have been too chicken to take them without a vitamin and I had very few side effects. I do not know if there is a direct correlation, I did not want to test it -- why mess with a good thing? :-) Some women have had better results by taking the pill before the meal, others after and still others have said that they take it in the middle of the meal. Bottom line, you need to do what works for her. You can play with this drug a little to find out what works for her so that she can get up to the prescribed dosage without the stomach upset. I guess now I can say that someone had good results from a GP! This is the first one that I remember. Super! Good luck.
