Abby, when I was 17, I knew already something was wrong but I wasn't real excited to have to deal with it. I was the same as you - going for months without having a period or the other end of the spectrum - it wouldn't stop, and I mean, for months! I was already noticing that I was more hairy than I used to be and no matter how active I was, I was still gaining weight. I was told to lose weight (um, hello?? If I could, I would!) and that I was just irregular and everything would work itself out. Well, everything did not work itself out. Abby, your school nurse will, most likely, not have a clue about what is going on with your body. Please see a doctor *now* and let us know how you are doing.
