Dear Jenni,

I am 25 and was diagnosed when I was 23.

As far as losing the weight you've gained - DO NOT LOSE HOPE! I gained nearly 50 pounds before I started treatment for PCOS and have lost 30 so far. The key for me was that I was insulin resistant (which caused my PCOS), so fixing that gave me back normal body functioning so that I could lose weight like normal people can - by a little diet and exercise. Without treatment, I couldn't lose the weight without exercising 21 miles per week and eating no more than 1200 calories a day. That's crazy. After treatment started, I lost 15 pounds by walking a few hours a week and eating more fruits and vegetables (thereby squeezing out the junk). That's how it was supposed to be!

After treatment with Metformin, I was able to lose weight, got all my energy back, returned to normal reporductive functioning and am now pregnant with my first child.

The ultrasound is a little scary the first time becuase you don't know what to expect. They'll probably have you drink a lot of water beforehand so that they can see your internal organs more clearly as they look thorugh or around a full bladder. They'll probably do it transvaginally, which means they'll use a thin wand to see up through your cervix into your abdominal cavity to look at your ovaries and uterus. You'll be able to see on a TV screen what they see, so that's pretty neat. Ask the technician to tell you what she sees and show you anything interesting. She can freeze the screen, too, to point out things. The wand does not hurt, but is a little embarassing (she will drape your knees with a blanket or gown so you won't feel "exposed")- just know that the technician does that all day long and sees it clinically - she'll treat you with respect and gentleness and take care of you.

I'd love to support you and tell you how things went for me as you go through diagnosis.
