Insulin resistanceFrom: Herring (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 13 Jun 2000 11:34:17 -0500
I found some interesting information on IR on the American Diabetes website. It explaines somewhat about what causes IR. Some of you may enjoy the reading. http://www.diabetes.org/diabetesforecast/99february/pg85.asp Annetta -----Original Message----- From: Jolene Miller [mailto:anonymous@obgyn.net Sent: Tuesday, June 13, 2000 10:49 AM To: Multiple recipients of list PCOS Subject: Re: PCOS Sarah - If you feel comfortable sharing, what tests did the doc order and what were your results? There are plenty of knowledgeable folks on the board who can help. Given that insulin resistance underlies PCOS, you are right to worry about developing diabetes, as IR often progesses to it. There are things that can be done to help control the IR. Remember that docs can't keep on top of all the research on all diseases, and there has been a lot of research on PCOS the last 2-3 years. Get educated - use the Web, the public library, a medical library, if you have access to one - and share the information with your doctor! Hang in there! Jolene, in Toledo
>>> RuachAdoni1@yahoo.com 6/13/00 11:27:43 AM >>> I was given an ultrasoud due to pelvic pain and was told by the DR. that I had what appeared to be Poly Cystic Ovaries. I do not have a period and never have unless induced by Provera. Took BCP for 1 month and was so deathly ill from the hormone combonation that I will never take them again. I have been sexually active since I was 22 years old (26 now. Have had 2 partners in my lifetime and have never used protection against pregnancy and have never been pregnant. Told Dr. all of this plus the physical symptoms of ammenoreha, weight problems, currently starting to get acne mildly and never had it before, skin tags etc. Dr. took hormone levels from me and said they all came back fine. My question is I have all the symptoms of PCOS but my Dr. refuses to give me anything other than Provera which causes my severe cramps, and will not dx me with PCOS since my hormone levels are "normal". What should I do? Do these levels have to be off when an ultrasound clearly shows lumpy ovaries? My sister has diabetes and I am afraid that if I am being misdiagnosed that the PCOS may causes me to get diabetes.
