Re: What does Met do?????From: Belle (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon, 12 Jun 2000 22:39:52 -0500 (CDT)
Metformin (Glucophage) will help your cells accept your insulin and since your insulin is how glucose gets into the cell, it will help your body use your glucose. With your insulin problem taken care of, you may be at a much lower risk for developing diabetes which is a very bad problem for women with PCOS. We have greater than a 50% chance of developing this in our lifetimes. You would also have a reduce risk of heart disease. Since it is thought that the insulin problem in women with PCOS is the cause of the other hormonal abnormalities, taking met may help you with the other problems associated with PCOS. You may see a reduction in the amount of hairs that you lose. You may see a reduction in the amount of body hair that grows or in the rate of growth. You may begin to have regular periods which would reduce your risk of endometrial cancer. In a small percentage of women, weight loss is a side effect of metformin. Over all it is the best alternative that we have at the time and is currently the only medical intervention that "attacks" the "source" of PCOS.
