Re: Cushing's Disease or Graves DiseaseFrom: adipose (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon, 5 Jun 2000 13:01:32 -0500 (CDT)
Hi Donna. I too have been tested for Cushings about ten years ago, although I had been clinically diagnosed with PCOS 20 years ago after the birth of my only child. A corporate move from Washington D.C. to Milwaukee made me change endo doc, and the new one was convinced I had Cushings because of the presence of my buffalo hump on the back of my neck and the stretch marks on my abdomen (both signs of Cushings) in addition to the usual PCOS symptoms. There response was "We're sure you have Cushings and we will treat it and you will feel back to normal soon." Well, I had the tests and I did not have Cushings. Talk about a roller coaster ride. All that just made me feel worse. I now have a friend who does have Cushings; she has had several operations and had her adrenal glands removed. Physically, we look like twins with our truncal obesity, etc., except she has a severe pigmentation problem due to the Cushings, her skin is getting darker and darker all the time, she looks like she spent all year down in the tropics. This really bothers her but it is a mild symptom compared to the others. From what I understand, PCOS and Cushings are different branches of the same tree along with Graves disease too. All are hormonal diseases of the endocrine system. PCOS and Cushings can look very much alike in symptoms, and requires testing by experts. My friend is by no means cured, and she still battles with all her side effects which are similar to PCOS.(tiredness, obesity, round moon face, dizzy spells, skin sensitivity, lack of stamina, foggy brain , infertility, etc.) I also remember that Barbara Bush was being treated for Graves Disease when she was in the White House. One of the symptoms of Graves is bulging eyes, but I am not sure of the other symptoms. There still seems to be a lack of good medical info concerning these endo diseases. My doc says it is due to lack of research but that is changing now because of the percentage of women with these diseases is increasing so it is becoming more profitable for the pharmaceutical companies is fund the research. I have had PCOS for 20 yrs now and have been through almost all the things I read on this board. I do not post very often, but I do read it regularly. You may find more technical info on these diseases on the medical sites on this board. Sorry I couldn't help more. Keep the faith. Adipose
