Re: How do you ladies find insurance??From: Michelle (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 31 May 2000 02:34:16 -0500 (CDT)
Hi Sonnet On behalf of all Californians, welcome! :-) I hope you enjoy it here. Let me know if you need any help adjusting to California life. I have lived here all my life and know a lot about where to go and what to do here. Anyway, I have Aetna health insurance through my husband's work. Here's their website: http://www.aetnaushealthcare.com My husband quit his job and is currently self-employed, so we have COBRA which basically says we get to have the same health coverage we had when he was working there, but we have to pay for it ourselves. We pay $650.00 per month for both of us including dental and vision care. Yes, it is a lot of money, but I can't go without it because I can't get insurance due to my weight and my high blood pressure. Also, there's this lovely thing called a pre-existing condition, that most insurers dislike when granting individual policies. For example, if you state on your application that you have PCOS, there will be limitations on treatment for that particular disorder, like they will make you wait six months before they will cover anything relating to that disease. The reason they don't ask you any of this when getting insurance through your husband is because the insurance companies spread the risk out among all the employees at a given company. But anyway I do agree with you that this system is really bad. My husband is from Denmark and he just can't believe the difficulties Americans have in getting basic health care. Good luck in your search. Michelle K. in CA
