Here's a totally different take on it.

I'm a freelancer so I have to privately insure myself. Which means i use one of the big health insurance companies and go for their individual/self-employed plan. Mine right now is Physician's Health Plan (i'm in NYC) but Blue Cross Blue Shield, every company has them.

I pay $357 a month for an hmo type plan. it's high and i wonder really if it's worth it. (I'm not even on met or anything) A friend of mine is also freelance and she just has what is called 'catastrophic' coverage. Basically it covers you if you get hit by a bus or something. BUt regular exams and other stuff you pay for yourself.

She has been freelance a looong time and has been doing her insurance this way too for that long. It seems to be the cheapest way, according to her. So you could try that.

ALso, if you itemize on your taxes, i think you can take tax deductions for your health care. Which helps when you're sucking up the cost out of pocket..
