Beth: Did your doctor suggest any other treatment besides the BCP? and water pills? Did he know about the insulin resistance associated with PCOS? This is my OPINION, so do with it what you will, I was right where you are, diagnosed and put on BCP. I did alot of research on PCOS and found out what the long term health risks were. I called my doctor back and informed her of the information I had found and asked for more tests, she did cholestorol screening and fasting glucose. So things looked ok, but I continued to have problems. At my next annual exam, I asked again for more tests and a change in pills. I believe the BCP does help and I will take it until I feel I am 'regulated' enough by other means to cycle normally. The birth control pills prevent more cysts from forming on my ovaries, therefore I believe they will 'preserve' the health of my ovaries and hopefully my fertility. I know they don't work for everyone, but I have normal cycles on the pill. Anyway, she did a IGTT and sure enough I'm IR. So, she offered me Met. I was not ready to "go there". So, I am doing the Inositol, chromium and low carb route. It is helping. I feel alot better, and have lost weight. In a couple of months she is going to retest my IGTT and see where I am, and the decision for or against Met will be made at that time. So, yes there are things that you can and should do. To preserve your fertility and to ensure your long term health and well being. If your doctor is not sensitive to these issues, and open to learning new things about PCOS, get a new one. Good luck to you, sorry this got long, hope it helps! At Sun, 28 May 2000, A wrote: >
