Re: Chromium Picolinate and dosage??From: Belle (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon, 29 May 2000 10:28:09 -0500 (CDT)
It has taken a while a lot of research to find the answer to this simple question. I studied conversions in school but have since forgotten. :-( I ended up going to a pharmacist friend and looking through his books, then doing some calculations with him to come up with this answer. Mcg is the same as ĩg. Others on here are correct in saying that mg is much more than mcg. I think a good recommendation would be to take 200 mcg of chromium per day. I have never seen a label like the one you describe so it is difficult for me to determine exactly what the label means. The general consensis here (and this is just a guess)is that the bottle is saying that each pill provides 403 mcg of ingredients (which may contain color, filler, ingredients to make the pill form, etc.) and 50 mcg of chromium. Look at the ingredients and see if Chromium is listed twice, look at the inactive ingredients and see if it seems to contain several things. Our suggestion is that you take the bottle to your pharmacist and tell them that you would like to take 200 mcg of Chromium because of glucose metabolism and that you just want to get their opinion on what that would be for this particular formulation. The FDA recommends that the intake be between 50 and 200 mcg /day. There have been no toxicity studies that I am aware of but people taking over 250 mcg have reported having a fast or irregular heart beat and some studies done with chromium picolinate on mice have shown some cancer links. These results have not been seen with the other forms of chromium so the thought is that the picolinate portion is the causative agent. To be fair, the mice were given LARGE doses of chromium and you could not match it (adjusting for size) if you took 4 of these tablets a day. Sorry that I could not be of more help.
