Re: Where does the weight gain come from? and how do i loose it?From: Kay (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sat, 20 May 2000 10:49:40 -0500 (CDT)
Hi Jessica~~ You've come to a great place for info and support. Your story sounds like so many others here. The weight gain, etc. with PCOS seems to be rooted in an insulin resistance problem. Insulin is the hormone released by our bodies to deal with carbs, turn them to glucose, and then help our bodies deal with it. When this goes haywire, too much insulin is released or the insulin that is released doesn't do it's job as it is supposed to. This makes our bodies store the glucose as fat--UGH! That's why there seems to be sudden weight gains, etc. When this system gets "off", it causes other hormones to go haywire too--leaving acne, facial hair, thinning head hair, etc. etc. We seem to be finding alot of symptoms that are PCOS related. To treat PCOS effectively, it seems that the insulin resistance problem must be dealt with. Many women are finding help with medications such as metformin and others, or supplementation with Chromium and inositol, or a combination. It's important to find a good dr. who is willing to run the appropriate tests and treat with something besides just BCP"S! Some have found help with a knowledgable gyn, many more with a knowlegable endocrinologist or repro. endo. I hope you find the help you need. This is all my limited knowledge of what's happening from reading here and at other sites. I'm not a dr., nor do I play one on TV! Although, would love to get on ER sometime! :o)
