PCOS, Metformin and cholesterol

My RE, for reasons not entirely clear to me, is resisting treating me with Metformin because I do not want to try to conceive for another six months (I have a 6-month old son conceived through injectibles and IUI).

In the meantime, she's sent me to an internist because my cholesterol is high -- it was 290 and with Lipitor has gone down to 209. She still says it's too high for Metformin. But I thought Metformin could help with cholesterol problems! I'm also on Atkins, per my internist's orders, and it's working.

Is there a cutoff for Metformin and cholesterol?
