Looking for the answer

I read the 3/7 "Woman's Day" article and luckily came upon this site. I am 45 years old. I have had so many of these symptoms for years!!! I was a thin child and in pre-puberty I started to just gain weight. After starting my period at about age 13, I started to have terrible acne and then facial hair growth along with other body hair. I went to a dermatologist who injected my face with needles to help the painful cystic acne. I started to have irregular periods and terrible PMS and cramping. I then went to a gynecologist who put me on birth control pills. This regulated me but did not help the acne or hair. I then was sent to an endocrinoligist who tested me at the time through my urine. I was put on prednisone and told to go to an electrologist for the hair. Unfortunately, my parents did not keep these records. My parents saw results and then I did not go back to this Doctor.

When I was older and tried to get my records, I found out that the Dr. had retired and the records were gone. I married at age 22 and about age 23 I started to have very bad PMS and cramping and facial hair again. I went to an endocrinologist who tested me and said I had "normal" levels. I became pregnant very easily that same year in 1979. I had premature labor with my son at 32 weeks, and was hospitalized. They were able to stop the labor and my son was born at 39 weeks. I became pregnant a second time in 1981. At about 14 weeks into that pregnancy, I started to bleed heavily and was hospitalized again. I was put on bed rest and my son was born at 36 weeks. I waited to get pregnant because I was afraid that I would have trouble again. The doctors said both instances were unalike so they did not discourage me from getting pregnant. I got pregnant in July 1985, and I started with premature contractions in January 1986. They put me on bed rest and a drug to stop the contractions. I gave birth to my third son in April - about 10 days early. I was just turning 31.

By age 33 I was again having difficulties with my period. I had terrible PMS and eractic periods. I thought I was pregnant a couple of times because of missed periods. My ob/gyn did an endometrial biopsy - no problems. I started to gain weight easily and have the facial hair again. I went back to the endocrinologist who tested me and said my levels were "normal". He put me on birth control pills. This helped me have regular periods, but did not help the weight or hair. He then tried aldactone, but I developed a terrible allergic reaction. I then just gave up. I have had sonograms, a D&C for a polyp, and have been on HRT because I stopped having my period.

I just want an answer. I am tired of feeling like I am crazy. I am afraid that I will develop some ailment that could have been avoided. I also have a niece who is experiencing these things now. My sister has had thyroid problems. I have had cousins on my dad's side of the family who have similar symptoms. I have contacted a doctor from the list from pcos. Let me know if you have had results.
