Re: Insurance Companies and Weight!!! <<ANGRY>>From: Ginger (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri, 31 Mar 2000 15:50:35 -0600 (CST)
I hear ya sister!!!!! Our health insurance is awful, but not because of my weight-it's a different story...BUT, recently my husband and I decided to be responsible grown ups and increase our life insurance coverage since we have 2 children now. : ) So, anyway, we went through physicals and everything. My husband's policy was approved right away with no problem. By the way, he smokes a cigar maybe once a month with his buddies at work, so the insurance co. considers him a smoker. Well, we have to pay a higher premium because of that, but get this... they wouldn't even give me the policy I applied for but his was approved immediately!!!! Mine was even for $20,000 less than his coverage! When I hadn't gotten a notice of approval by 6 weeks after we received his, I called our agent's office and after hearing 3 different people hem-haw around about it, someone finally had the nerve to say, "well, there's no reason listed here as to why it wasn't approved, but they refer to the height/weight portion of the physical" I went balistic - they didn't even bother telling me that it wasn't going to be approved until I called and started bugging them about it. Well, they were "generous" enough to offer me another type of policy - by the way it costs about $25.00/month more than the other one!!!! Well, what can you do? We have to have the coverage so, I figured I guess it'd have to do. It SUCKS! Are we going to have to defend our weight to every single person we encounter for the rest of our lives????? So, sorry I can't offer you a solution, I guess I needed to vent too! You're not alone hon! All you can do is keep applying with other companies I suppose, hopefully someone else will have a better suggestion! (I did mention discrimination a few times while I was flying off the handle, which did manage to fluster the lady I was talking to, but haven't taken it any further.) Oh yeah, when they mailed me the paperwork for the policy, it had a sticky note attached with "sorry for the inconvenience and delay" with a smiley face and a FREE "courtesy pre-paid 20 minute phone card". I felt like calling and saying "Thanks!!! That really made up for you treating me like dirt!!" GEESH!!!!
