Re: Question re: Glucose Tolerance Tests

I have a question about WHEN to take a GTT... I have been on Met for a month and had to go to the doctor on Wednesday to get my liver enzymes 'n' stuff checked. I'm on a relatively low dose - 500mg 2x per diem. My doctor did a fasting glucose test, thyroid test, etc. before he put me on the Met, but he and I had a disagreement about whether the Met would help. He wanted to put me on BCPs or Provera and leave it there and I wanted to try this because all the symptoms looked so similar to mine. (Thanks to the board, I knew what to ask!<G>)

Anyhow, when I went back in on Wednesday, I asked if there would be an advantage to taking a GTT. He said no, since I'd started a period on the Met, we knew I was insulin resistant and there was no real benefit to doing the test. He also said that he doesn't see any need to refer me to an RE because we have this under control now.

And I'm sort of torn. I'm venturing into low carbs by myself because my doctor keeps telling me to lose weight and to eliminate fat and it hasn't been working - very frustrating. I asked him about it and he said it wouldn't hurt, but he couldn't see it being very helpful. *sigh* And, of course, the Met and the carbs don't seem to be agreeing with each other. So I feel like I'm doing what I can - I'm taking the Met, I'm dieting, I'm starting to exercise. What else is there to do that the medical profession could help with, right? On the other hand, I wonder about these tests and the blood sugars - the Met still isn't going down easy for me. I'm nauseous all the time, constantly thirsty and my stomach is doing backflips every time I *think* about eating. (And yet - no weight loss... <sad face>)

So... Does anyone know of a benefit to getting the GTT done later in the game after an IR diagnosis has already been made? Or is it just me wishing that I was more in control of my body?

Thanks for any help. Sorry for the LONG post... I'm just sitting at work feeling a little helpless today and it makes me feel better to talk!
