Re: Polycystic without the cysts?

I had "normal" ultrasound results. I was told that my ovaries were of normal size and shape. My dr. thought that because of my pain and lack of periods that something must be wrong so he did and exploratory. He found over 100 cysts on each ovary.

You do not have to have cysts though to have PCOS. The name was set before that fact was determined. You can still be insulin resistant without the cysts. Some drs are beginning to prescribe metformin to women based on the diagnosis of PCOS since the results have been so good. It is rare to have a 92% success rate on any study, and metformin has had similar success in every trial with anovulatory women. Your dr may be informed about the studies and may be willing to put you on met because it does seem to be the most helpful thing that we have tried.

It would be good to remain prescription free but with an imbalance like ours that carries such horrible outcomes (heart disease, diabetes and cancer) meds may be a necessary evil.

I have never heard of anyone's insurance flat out refusing to pay for met but I have heard of drs putting insulin resistant down as a secondary diagnosis in order to cover the possibility that the insurance may balk. If there are any problems, you should call (or have the dr call, or both) and explain to the insurance co that 40% of women with PCOS develop diabetes and metformin is the drug of choice for that condition and that the use of metformin has been studied in non-diabetic patients and proven to lower the risk of heart attack and stroke (Gluech, 1997) thereby reducing the cost to the insurance company by using preventative maintainance to insure health.
