Polycystic without the cysts?From: Christy (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 23 Mar 2000 20:52:18 -0600 (CST)
I was recently diagnosed with PCOS. My doctor found high levels of testosterone in my bloodwork. I also suffer from excessive hair growth, mild depression, irregular periods, and I have gained about 25 pounds during this last year. My symptoms seem to be getting gradually worse as I get older. Today I had both a pelvic and vaginal ultrasound done. My ovaries were found to be "normal". I am wondering how these recent findings will influence my doctor's decision on how to medicate me. I would love to be prescription free, but I realize that I have a problem and I am sick of living with it. I'm not interested in being put on birth control pills. I gained about 25 pounds and had high blood pressure. Met sounds OK, but would this be prescribed to someone who doesn't even have cysts? Also, if it is not approved by the FDA for use on PCOS patients, how could I get my HMO to pay for it? I'm sure that it is all in the wording. I'm just trying to get this all straight before I review these ultrasound results with my doctor. Please let me know if anyone has advice for me.
