Re: Belle-The pill and PCO

I have had some questions about this. Let me try to clear up some of this. I am opposed to the use of the birth control pill as a "treatment" for PCOS because PCOS affects so many things and the pill doesn't try to fix the *cause* of PCOS. Right now, it seems that the cause of PCOS is mainly an insulin problem. I know that some of the drs doing the most research in this area think that probably all of the women with PCOS have insulin problems at some level and that they could be detected if our tests were sensitive enough. The pill will cause you to have a period (usually) but many women have also had great success on a low carb diet. I have had regular periods on metformin (which also has cleared up almost all of my other symptoms). Provera would be a great back up to have.

I also felt very hungry while I was on the last couple of BCPs. The reason that so many drs prescribe the pill for PCOS is because until recently, there was no other option for us. Many are just not up to date on the current research.

I posted something about two days ago for Cheryl, I think. I will link it for you. It has links to other resources that talk about PCOS this should be of some help. http://forums.obgyn.net/pcos/PCOS.0003/date.html
