Hi! I'm glad you found a place to get some answers. Since hair seems to be your main concern right now, I'll answer that question. I hope you will download some of the informational brochures from the PCOS Assoc. website and get some help on the rest of the health issues. Can you talk to your dad, or an aunt, or a teacher who could help you get more medical help? The sad part is PCOS is not understood by all doctors, and you sometimes have to be pretty pushy to get the help you need. I know this is hard to do on your own at 14. Know that you are not alone, there are many of us fighting these same problems.

The following website has some pictures of varying degrees of excess hair. This may help you know where you are in the normal range.

Hair control options I use include shaving, waxing, bleaching, plucking, electrolysis and laser hair removal. I've never had any luck with cream hair removers (that "dissolve away" the hair), but you might.

Waxing CAN be done at home, I use Nair's microwave wax. But you should not try it yourself until you've had it done at a beauty shop 1st (several times, & I still bruise myself sometimes). I was embarassed the 1st time I went, but I realized they see this all day long, I'm not the only one!The nicer beauty shops usually offer waxing, call and ask. They will wax eyebrows, under arms, legs, bikini area, anything I guess. I think I paid $40 or so for the bikini area. Hint: use a loofah on the area to be waxed before and after waxing, to avoid ingrown hairs. I can't have my legs waxed, too many ingrown hairs.

Bleaching:I never wanted to shave or wax my face, because all the hair regrows at the same rate, resulting in stubble. I use a cream FACIAL bleach by Sally Hanson, you can get it at drug stores, $10 or so. Make sure to use the one for face, the others are too harsh & will irritate your skin, resulting in a noticable red line over your lip, I know from experience. I also pluck some hairs every day to keep the thickness down. I also bleach the hair on my arms. Hint: don't try to bleach your eyebrows, I did when I was 14 and they turned red. It's hard to hide red eyebrows, when you have brown hair. :)

I used to think there was too much hair on my upper lip to pluck, but I started plucking 10-20 hairs a day, and it really helps control it. Tweezers are slow but cheap.

I tried electrolysis for several years. It's pretty expensive $30/ 20 min. session I think. I went monthly for years and the hair kept growing back. That's because in PCOS we have too many male hormones, promoting new growth. There are prescription medications to slow new growth. Maybe if I had been on medication, the electrolysis would have been more successful. I know many people who have had success with electrolysis.

Laser hair removal is new and expensive, and they don't really know if it results in PERMANENT hair loss. I will probably try that in the future.

Hope this helps! Stick around this board and do what you can to get some help. Good luck & warm wishes - Jan
