Re: does this describe polycystic ovaries?

Dear Jean,

I sounds like you have cysts on your ovaries. You can have mulitple cysts on your ovaries and they not show up on an ultrasound. Several years ago, I myself had an ultrasound that showed "normal sized ovaries". My dr at the time thought something was wrong so he did an exploratory. He found over one hundred cysts on each ovary and decided to release the fluid (I had already signed the consent form in case cysts were found) and a scheduled 30 minute surgery turned into over 2 hours. My hubby and dad were very anxious. I have a video tape showing the surgery and all of the cysts.

Since then we have discovered that you do not have to have cysts on your ovaries in order to have polycystic ovary syndrome. The name of this disorder was changed from Stein-Leventhal to PCOD(disorder) to PCOS before it was realized that the actual cysts were not necessary in order for the symptoms to become evident. There is no definitive test for PCOS. It is a syndrome and you may have two or more of the numerous symptoms for diagnosis. These include (but are not limited to): unexplained weight gain, irregular periods, absent periods, high levels of testosterone or other androgens, abnormal FSH/LH levels, facial hair growth, scalp hair loss, acne, etc. You can find more information on the PCOSupport home page. http://www.pcosupport.org There is a section from the Woman's Day Magazine that is available to help determine if you should be concerned about PCOS.
