Yes, pcos is hereditary. You could have gotten it from either your mother or your father (or even both). Many women with pcos are overweight, but not all. Some of us used to be quite thin, but gained weight inexplicably in our late 20's and early 30's. It seems that we are more successful at achieving pregnancy when we are young. As the condition progresses, pregnancy becomes more difficult.

Most women with pcos also have insulin resistance. Metformin is an anti-diabetic drug that helps our bodies to more effectively use insulin. Many of us have seen great changes while on met- a reduction in male pattern hair growth, weight loss, a resumption of our monthly period, increased fertility, and a decrease in the likelihood of getting heart disease or diabetes.

The birth control pill will help you have a regular period, but it won't help with any of the other symptoms and risks.
