Carolyn-

It's great that you and your daughter have found out she has PCOS so early. A lot of the women here went through many years wondering WHAT was wrong with them. Doctors that had no clue, doctors that told them "oh if you just lose weight you'll be normal". It's all crap.

Seeing an endocrinologist is a good idea. I'm 29 and found out I have PCOS when I was 18, but haven't bothered to treat my symptoms until now that we are trying to conceive. There are more options for your daughter now than some of us ever had. I'm currently on Glucophage (sometimes mentioned as Metformin) to help with the insulin resistance that usually goes along with PCOS and is suspected to CAUSE the PCOS.

Make sure your daughter is prepared for some of the symptoms she COULD have (weight gain, hirsutism (hair where ya don't want it), cystic acne, and more). The other health factors you read about in the article CAN happen, but please don't get yourself upset because they do not happen to all of us. If your family is predisposed to cancers or diabetes then she should be monitored for those things anyway. Just because she has PCOS doesn't mean she is going to have ovarian or cervical cancer.

If you want to email me privately please do so and make that endocrinologist appointment. They are hormone specialists as insulin is a hormone. I wonder why the gynie didn't do an ultrasound? Some of us have the cysts and some of us do not. Myself, I have had u/s that showed cysts and others that did not. Did the gynie give her any medication? Is your daughter having irregular periods? The first gynie I saw at about 15 said, "oh you're still young, your periods won't be regular until your in your early 20's". See what I mean about crap? Personally, birth control is only a bandaid to regulate the periods. In my opinion, PCOS IS an endocrine disorder and that issue needs to be addressed primarily and birth control doesn't do that.
