Christy, The reason that doctors recommend going off of metformin when you become pregnant is because there have not been studies done to say that metformin is safe to take while pregnant. There also has not been studies done or a case reported where it has been shown to be harmful. When there are no studies saying that it is safe doctors are usually cautious and advise not to take it simply because they don't know or have not been told it is safe. They feel safer because of liability issues.

When I was trying to find a doctor for my girls most doctors would not consider even testing their insulin levels because they would not consider giving metformin unless they were trying to get pregnant. One doctor said that it was okay to take metformin because they were not trying to get pregnant. He said they would have to go on BCP because you could not risk getting pregnant while on metformin. I explained that the fertility experts used metformin to help women get pregnant, he thought I was stupid and misinformed. The truth is that most doctors are misinformed and confused.

At the Atlanta Reproductive Health Center, Dr. Perloe and Dr. Sills advise to stay on metformin. They also think that women should not use clomid for months after beginning metformin treatment to give the metformin a chance on its own. Many doctors think that you should immediately begin both in order for metformin to work and never give metformin a chance to balance everything on its own. There is a discussion board moderated by Dr. Sills at http://www.inciid.org/forums/pcos/index.html. If you look in the archives you can read where Dr. Sills explains his opinions. Or just ask Dr. Sills.

I hope this helps but basically you just have to read and make up your own mind.
