Re: PCOS and dieting?

I have recently embarked on the Atkins low-carb diet. I have to tell you regardless of the weight loss, I havent felt so good in 10 years!

I have been on and off low fat diets for 10 years, not realising they were exactly the opposite of what I should be doing. Turns out everytime I had an extra fat free yoghurt i was pouring sugar into my system which made me gain weight! My typical pattern on Weight Watchers or Slimming World would be massive weight loss in first two weeks (say a stone) followed by nothing for week or two then without cheating from the diet I would start to gain a pound at a time. And nobody beleived me. Crikey I even didnt really believe it and thought I was going mad. One GP even told my I had an eating disorder that I must own up to if I wanted him to help me!

Since visitng the PCOS Association web site, Ive found a lot of information all pointing to the fact that low fat diets are not good for people with PCOS. I borrowed the Atkins book from my local library. As I started to read it was like someone switched a big light on and I finally understood what was going on. Tho I was diagnoes with PCOS in 1988 - all I was told at that time was that I wouldnt be able to have children - which turns out wasnt a problem for me. I read about the cases that Atkins has handled and recognised me in most of them! Its such a huge relief!. In fact Ive since bought the book thru Amazon and read it over and over just to get all the facts straight in my own head.

Im in the UK, so not on the same time zone as most other PCOS sufferers that post at PCOS web site, but you can always email me if you want to exchange views and experiences. Seems to be a common theme - it is so wonderful to know that Im not on my own. :))

Good luck Sam Phillips
